20160824_144248On August 24th, 2016 The Community School of Maryland (CSM) held its second annual Science Fair.  The CSM middle and high school students each chose a question that they wanted to answer and using the scientific method created a hypothesis, and tested it. Students practiced graphing to display the data they collected, and put their experiment on display on a poster board.  One student’s experiment was chosen as the winner of the Science Fair, but all students received a ribbon commemorating their involvement and all of their hard work.

On June 2 2016, The students at The Community School of Maryland had a day of fun in the sun, during their annual Field Day events.  After welcoming remarks, and group warm-up exercises, each classroom rotated through different stations around the campus participating in various sport activities and games such as basketball, football, baseball, bowling, relay races and more!  To close the day’s events, there was a medal ceremony where all students were awarded medals for participation! Field day has been a cyclical event is a great way to provide students the opportunity to exercise and have a great time with their peers!

On June 17, 2016, The Community School of Maryland celebrated the graduation of seven of their hardworking students. Families, friends and local school systems were in attendance to witness these 7 graduates walk across the stage and receive their certificates.  There was a slideshow presentation to give families a look back into the lives of the graduates. CSAAC’s Executive Director, Mr. Lawrence Rossomondo delivered the keynote address to usher in the new stage in these 7 individuals lives as they embark on the world of adult living.  On behalf of the entire CSAAC family, congratulations to all of you!

On May 13, 2016, The Community School of Maryland held its 5th annual prom.  Students and their families enjoyed a night of music, dancing and refreshments in an Underwater Paradise! The DJ did a fantastic job with music selections and took requests so the students could dance to their favorite songs.  Prior to the event, all of the students in the school were given a ballot to vote for this year’s Prom King. Toward the end of the evening, the Prom King was announced and was invited on stage to receive his crown. Thanks to the staff who helped organize and set up this event, and all the families who came out and participated in the festivities.

It’s important for special education students in non-public schools to be able to interact with their typical peers in the public school system.  The Community School of Maryland is proud to announce the development of a great opportunity for CSM students to have a pen pal in a local high school through the Best Buddies program. Students have regular opportunities to have a dialog with their pen pals who attend Sherwood High School. This opportunity not only offers peer interaction, but also helps CSM students to develop social skills and provides a real life scenario in which to practice typing and to learn how to utilize a computer and email.  Some CSM students will participate in a musical performance on Saturday May 7th at the Best Buddies Friendship Walk in College Park, MD.  Please come by to enjoy the walk and great music!

CSAAC’s Community School of Maryland (CSM) strives to provide students with job and community living skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. The goal is to enable the students the ability to provide a positive impact in their communities. As example, Kurt, Jacob, and Nick are three CSM students that have been doing volunteer work for Meals on Wheels over the past 3 years. Their assignment is food delivery for the residents of the Leisure World community in Silver Spring. Each week the students’ job is to pick up the food, load the vehicle and proceed on their delivery route to all the customer locations. This process has taught them valuable job and communication skills. It also benefits the customers who enjoy socializing with our magnificent students each week. Kurt, Jacob and Nick will be graduating from Community School of Maryland in June. Congratulations to them! Stay tuned for more interesting reports from CSAAC’s Community School of Maryland.
